About Our Guides

Whitewater Rafting GuidesRanging in age from 19 to 65 and comprised of an even balance of men and women, our Whitewater Voyages rafting guides hail from all over the United States, as well as from Australia, New Zealand, Latin and Central America - From Norway to Costa Rica.

These professional guides are teachers, bankers, stock brokers, nurses, computer geniuses, doctors, fire fighters, engineers, helicopter pilots, professional skiers, PhD mathematicians, improv actors, perpetual world travelers, probation officers, artists, stuntmen and stuntwomen in the off season and most return to guide with us year after year.

Some of our guides are published white water authors and photographers. Others have successfully started their own rafting companies. We are proud to have helped nurture and inspire their knowledge and experience during the earlier parts of their careers.

All Whitewater Voyages guides are certified in First Aid and CPR and are fully licensed. Our white water guides have a wealth of experience and are known internationally as among the best in the business. They are talented professionals who have guided rafting expeditions throughout the world. All bring a wealth of knowledge regarding the local river ecology, geology and wilderness environment in which they are based. Above all, each Whitewater Voyages guide is friendly, caring, kind and lots of fun to be around. Many of our rafters return year after year and request guides they have rafted with in the past.

Here, to give you just a sampling, are brief profiles of a handful of our Whitewater Voyages Guides, one of whom may be your guide on your next California whitewater voyage:

Bruce Cana Fox

Bruce Cana Fox
Bruce Cana Fox did his first river trip in 1957 with the Boy Scouts on the Ausable River in Michigan. He learned the J-stroke during the Eisenhower administration.

A long time client with Whitewater Voyages, he finally made time to go to guide school when the Naval Reserves retired him. He had so much fun at the '98 guide school, that he came back in '99. And he's been working the Kern ever since. He's the one we see often on the Lower Kern river hauling the lunch in an oar boat.

When he's not rafting, stacking rocks in the river, and doing desserts in the dutch oven, he works a day job at the airplane factory as an engineer designing computer and communications systems for combat aircraft. He is also an Aikido instructor, an artist, and a drum circle facilitator. He says, "Come visit me on the Kern!"

" I recently went to Whitewater Voyages' Guide School on the American River. What a life-changing experience! Bill McGinnis is a brilliant teacher and a kind soul. I wish everyone I know could get a chance to talk with him. His staff of instructors are knowledgable and supportive. They work their tails off to help everyone learn as much as they can. One great week in my life! "
